Why ACs take outsized storm damage
The outdoor condenser is a 100–150 lb box of aluminum fins and copper coils sitting in the most wind-exposed spot in your yard. Three failure modes dominate:
- Wind debris: branches, fencing, and lawn items become projectiles that crumple fin packs and bend coil tubing.
- Tip-over: unsecured units topple, kinking the refrigerant line set — a repair that often means replacing the whole system.
- Flooding: standing water above ~15 inches can submerge controls and blower motors; water-damaged electrical components rarely dry out safely.
And when the unit survives the storm but the grid doesn't, the danger shifts indoors: a Florida home without AC becomes unsafe within hours for elderly residents, infants, and pets.
- Condenser
- The outdoor AC unit that releases heat pulled from your home. Its thin aluminum fins exchange heat efficiently — and damage easily.
- Line set
- The insulated copper pipes connecting the outdoor condenser to the indoor air handler. A kinked line set usually means a full refrigerant circuit replacement.
- Hard-start kit
- A small capacitor-and-relay add-on that helps a compressor start under strain — useful after outages when voltage sags.
- Surge protector (AC disconnect)
- A device installed at the outdoor disconnect box that absorbs voltage spikes. Lightning and grid restoration both send surges that kill compressors.
Before the storm: the 5-point AC checklist
- Get the tune-up now, not during the watch. A system already limping (low refrigerant, failing capacitor, clogged drain) is the one that dies during a multi-day run after the outage. Book ahead — tech schedules compress the moment a storm enters the forecast cone.
- Bolt the condenser to its pad. Hurricane straps or bolts through the unit's base into the concrete pad prevent tip-over. If yours sits unsecured on gravel or pavers, fix that first.
- Clear the perimeter. Remove loose items within 20 feet: furniture, toys, planters, and the shedding palm that overhangs the unit.
- Don't wrap the unit in plastic or tarps. Condensers are built to get wet — rain is fine. Wrapping traps moisture against coils and creates a corrosion and mold box. Securing matters; covering doesn't.
- Pre-cool the house. Drop the thermostat 3–5°F below normal while power lasts. A cool thermal mass buys comfort hours and protects heat-sensitive household members during the outage.
After the storm: before you flip the thermostat
- Walk the unit first. Look for dents, bent fins, oil stains (refrigerant leak signature), disconnected lines, and debris packed into the coil. Anything beyond surface debris: don't start it — call a tech.
- Never run a unit that stood in water. Flooded controls and motors can short or start a fire. If water reached the unit's electrical panel height, an inspection is mandatory.
- Clear debris from the coil, gently. Rinse fins with a garden hose (no pressure washer — it flattens fins). Pull branches and leaves by hand.
- Restore power gradually. When the grid returns, voltage is often unstable. If the compressor hard-starts, hums without starting, or trips the breaker, shut it off at the disconnect and call for service.
- Watch for the 72-hour telltales: warm air at the vents, ice on the line set, breaker trips, or a new rattling noise. Post-storm strain exposes borderline components — a $40 capacitor caught early is a $2,000 compressor saved.
